What is Bleed, and why do I need it?
BLEED is a printing term that refers to printing that goes beyond the edge of the sheet after trimming. If you want ink to the edges, you have to add bleed. You should build your document with at least 1/16″ added to each side.
Example: A flyer with a final size of 8-1/2″ x 11″ with bleeds would need art size of 8-5/8″ x 11-1/8″. A business cards with bleeds should be 3-5/8 x 2-1/8.
SAFETY refers to the area just inside the margins that is not meant to be trimmed off. Keep in mind that because of the mechanical tolerances involved in commercial printing, the actual cut can happen anywhere between the bleeds and the safety area.
